The Trinity in the Old Testament

I was always wondering if there was something written in the thora about trinity. The word itself I couldn’t find, but what I found I am now going to share with you.

In Genesis 1:26 we read:

And (Elohim) said. Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle,& over all the earth.

Elohim is here speaking in plural. That give the question: why? Was He not alone? Who are those others?

I also discovered that the word echad does not mean an “absolute one” but a “compound one.”

For example:

Genesis 2:24

a man and a woman come together in marriage and the two shall become one [echad] flesh.

Genesis 1:5

the combination of evening and morning comprise one (echad) day.

Ezekiel 37:17

two sticks are combined to become one (echad).

Ezra 2:64

the whole assembly was as one (echad),

So if we say that Yahweh is one, is does not mean that this is meant absolutely.

There are 3 divine persons who are referred as God found in the Thora.

1. Yahweh, the Lord
2. Yahweh, the Angel
3. Yahweh, the Spirit of God

Examples:

Isaiah 48:16

Come near unto me. hear this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning: from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord Yahweh, and his Spirit, hath sent me.

Genesis 16:7 and 13

Now the angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur.

Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?

Exodus 23:20‭-‬23

“Behold, I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. Be on your guard before him and obey his voice; do not be rebellious toward him, for he will not pardon your transgression, since My name is in him. But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. For My angel will go before you and bring you in to the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them.

Genesis 22:11‭-‬12‬

But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear Yahweh, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

In the next examples you see Yahweh is referring to Himself in all the 3 forms:

Isaiah 48:12‭-‬17 ‬

“Listen to Me, O Jacob, even Israel whom I called; I am He, I am the first, I am also the last. Surely My hand founded the earth, And My right hand spread out the heavens; When I call to them, they stand together. Assemble, all of you, and listen! Who among them has declared these things? The Lord loves him; he will carry out His good pleasure on Babylon, And His arm will be against the Chaldeans. I, even I, have spoken; indeed I have called him, I have brought him, and He will make his ways successful. Come near to Me, listen to this: From the first I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord Yahweh has sent Me, and His Spirit.” Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, Who leads you in the way you should go.

Isaiah 63:8‭-‬14‬

For He said, “Surely, they are My people, Sons who will not deal falsely.” So He became their Savior. In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the angel of His presence saved them; In His love and in His mercy He redeemed them, And He lifted them and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; Therefore He turned Himself to become their enemy, He fought against them. Then His people remembered the days of old, of Moses. Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit in the midst of them, Who caused His glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses, Who divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name, Who led them through the depths? Like the horse in the wilderness, they did not stumble; As the cattle which go down into the valley, The Spirit of the Lord gave them rest. So You led Your people, To make for Yourself a glorious name.

You can see that the Angel mentioned in the Thora is spoken of in the same way as is spoken about Yeshua. So if the Thora speaks of a Angel sent by Yahweh there’s a possibility that it is Yeshua.

Conclusion:

Hear O Israel Yahweh our God is one.
Yahweh, the Lord and Father
Yahweh, the Son Yeshua
Yahweh, the Holy Spirit
The trinity is one. The trinity is Yahweh.
